Abstract

The basis of all functional registers is the standard language with its norms. Thus the issue of existence of a system within a particular register refers to the relation between the normative and non-normative aspect of a language. The paper Registers from the standard language aspect shows that a relatively stable standard linguistic norm applies in newspaper, legal and scientific register, while in the spoken language and literary register a greater deal of dialectal and jargon elements, as well as the creation of new words derived from the individual register, are accepted. In linguistic practice there occur mistakes due to inadequate interfering of the functional registers’ characteristics, i.e. an inadequate code switching.

Today these phenomena are observed in the context of the modernisation of the linguistic norm, which does not rely on the language of literature, but rather on the language of press, radio and television and of other domains of urban life.
