Voice Repetitions in the Novel Ponornica

The paper analyzes voice repetitions in the novel Ponornica by Skender Kulenović. The focus is on assonance, alliteration and assonant-alliterative repetitions. Assonance and alliteration, as well as the combination of both figures, occur much more often in poetic than in prose text. Such is the case with the work of Skender Kulenović. Some of the most expressive assonances and alliteration are recorded in his poetry, but in this paper we will single out some examples of assonances and alliteration in the novel Ponornica. All the analyzed and excerpted examples of these figures will show that even in a prose work, by insisting on the use of certain voices, a certain atmosphere can be established, and that Kulenović often uses voice repetitions in his novel to emphasize the overall thematic atmosphere in the novel.

Task-Based Teaching of German as a Foreign Language

The aim of this research was to find out the students’ attitudes on taskbased teaching of German as a foreign language, that is, on tasks that might positively influence the acquisition of new lexical items, enhance pronunciation, and improve grammatical accuracy. Also, the research aimed at addressing the importance of rethinking the existing teaching methods, especially in the context of higher education teaching. Twentythree graduate students of German studies at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Split, Croatia, participated in this research. During the course Development of Speech Fluency, the students were introduced to the concept of task-based teaching and performed various tasks – role plays, argumentation and writing tasks, as well as story retelling and problem-solving tasks. Upon completion of the course, the students completed a questionnaire, stating their level of agreement with each statement. A significantly greater degree of agreement was recorded for the statement that more complex grammatical structures, such as the word order in German dependent clauses, should be taught through writing, rather than translation tasks, due to the possibility to plan and self-monitor. The obtained preference of the students in this study for the implementation of writing tasks has been documented by numerous studies that have confirmed the positive effects of writing on the development of grammatical accuracy in the context of teaching English as L2. The conclusions of this study, despite the relatively small sample of respondents, might be used to design more contemporary tasks with the ultimate goal of developing the learner’s interlanguage.

Grammatical and Semantical Features of Polar Questions in Infinitive Noun Phrases in Modern Turkish Language

This paper analyzes grammatical and semantic features of Turkish interrogative infinitive noun phrases containing polar questions. The primary aim of the paper is to determine, based on contextual examples, how root interrogative sentences containing neutral and focused polar questions are transformed into infinitive noun phrases through the process of nominalization. In the contrastive analysis, Turkish interrogative infinitive noun phrases with neutral and focused polar questions are compared with semantically similar syntactic structures in Bosnian language.

Reforms of the Pension System in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Social Implications of (Un)Sustainability of Pension System

unfavorable economic situation in the country has significantly affected the demographic picture. Negative natural population growth and emigration threaten the sustainability of pension systems in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The aging population and the increasingly unfavorable ratio of workers to retirees have emphasized the need for pension reforms in the Republika Srpska and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina to ensure stability and certainty in pension payments. Pension systems in Bosnia and Herzegovina have relied on the first pillar, namely the pay-as-you-go system, which has proven unsustainable in the post-war context. Pension reforms had to be implemented by other republics formed by the dissolution of the second Yugoslavia. The direction of pension reforms in all former Yugoslav republics, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, is towards the formation of a pension system based on three pillars. The paper presents key reasons for the need for pension system reform in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also presented are pension systems in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as key changes brought about by implemented reforms. By comparing the pension system in Bosnia and Herzegovina with systems in other former Yugoslav republics, social problems creating the need for further reform or restructuring of pension systems have been identified. Based on pension reforms carried out in other countries, it is possible to understand the purpose and logic of pension reforms that have been and will be undertaken in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as to detect social factors causing the need for reform.

In addition, the article clearly defines which global changes in society, but also in the standard of living in general, had the greatest impact on the change within the business environment, and which increased the greater risk for organizations and companies in terms of the appearance and spread of mobbing. Mobbing in its essence contains a series of mobbing activities from interfering with adequate communication, maintaining social relations, personal reputation, health... Therefore, an unhealthy work climate and environment will affect the increase in sick leave, decrease work productivity, and as a result have a worse position of the employer on the market and a decrease in his reputation.

Makarska in the Ottoman Era – An Endangered Market on the Border of The Empire

This paper points out the significance of Makarska as part of the Herzegovinian Sanjak during the two-century Ottoman rule. The border area location of that small coastal town is highlighted, which was quite limiting in terms of development. In this regard, continuous threats, i.e. hostility from the neighboring Venetian Dalmatia, are mentioned. The focus is on the port of Makarska, a commercial pier, as a destination of economic importance both for the local population and Visoka Port. Attention was also drawn to a number of difficulties in the functioning of the aforementioned pier, where mostly salt brought from the Venetian salt pans was sold. The role of the Makarska Franciscans and their monastery, which was formed, devastated, but also rebuilt in the indicated period, is emphasized. A brief overview of the social status of the inhabitants of the Makarska littoral is also given. Their willingness to cancel their loyalty to the sultan in wartime circumstances and show favor to the Republic of Venice was clarified.

Empathy, Individuation and Emanicipation of the Lyrical Subject in a Poem "Na pravi put sam ti, majko, izišo" by Skender Kulenović

The aim of this paper is to explore the concept of intimate reflection and empathy, as well as a specific individuation and emacipation of a lyrical subject in a poem Na pravi put sam ti, majko, izišo by Skender Kulenović. Through a linguostilistic analysis and close reading, taking into account a contextual approach along with Kulenović’s autobiographical and autopoetic statements, the text will shed some light on the reasons why, despite apparently betraying mother’s expectations, a true individuation and emancipation, and therefore the right road for the lyrical subject becomes possible only through active social engagement and resistance, and a rejection of social patterns which reproduce exploatation and suffering. This reading will show how principles of solidarity, justice and equality become a specific categorical imperative and sine qua non of both freedom and humanity, opening a possibility of female emancipation, as well as a transformation of the very concept of love. Consistent and rounded linguistic expression of a poem enables its aesthetic and ethical sovereignity which is paradigmatic for this author. Moreover, certain poetic breakthroughs make this poem unique in a broader, South Slavic linguistic, literary, and cultural context of a given time period.

Gender Theory and a Room of One’s Own By Virginia Woolf

This paper looks into the notion of gender and the gender role of women in the context of Virginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own (1929), but also in her novel Mrs. Dalloway (1925). Virginia Woolf laid the foundation for feminist theory by pointing out the marginalized position of women in society and literature through her novels and critical essays. She also questioned the idea of gender, and characterized it as an ideologically structured and socially controlled idea, which would later become the basis of gender theory. Virginia Woolf also emphasized the role of language in constructing identity and was among the first to draw attention to the importance of the concept that would later be called “women’s writing”/”feminine writing”. In her essay A Room of One’s Own, which many feminist theorists consider the first manifesto of modern feminist theory, Woolf shows the relationship between the sexes based on her own experience, and in particular deals with the issue of women in literature, thus opening up and problematizing some of the basic themes of feminism together with her overall work.
